Transformation of European values in contact with the foreign - the contribution of the Protestant missionary movement in the 19th century
The sub-project "Transformation of European value concepts in contact with the foreign - the contribution of the Protestant missionary movement in the 19th century" in the overall project "Transfer and Transformation of European Images of Protestant Missionaries in Contact with the Other, 1700-1970" by Judith Becker examines - using the examples of the Basel Mission, the Rhenish Missionary Society, the Church Missionary Society and the London Missionary Society - the changes in the value attitudes of European missionaries living for decades in foreign cultures. The research concentrates on the first generation of missionaries, i.e. the period up to 1860, focusing on conversion, conversion and sanctification: entry into the Christian community and specific consequent value attitudes and actions. The significance of the ideas of humanity in the sense of the commonality of people before God for the missionaries' conception is elaborated.
