New EGO article: »Künste« by Aleksandra Lipińska
The new article "Künste" by Aleksandra Lipińska has been published in German on European History Online (EGO). Lipińska turns the spotlight on arts as one of the most important instruments of transcultural communication. Travelling artists and clients, mobile artworks and circulating artistic ideas, forms, materials and techniques enriched the target cultures by creating a new quality through encounters with the traditions encountered there. However, artistic mobility could also mean loss: Artists also left their homeland unintentionally as exiles and art was equally taken away as spoils of war.

While the constant exchange of art between European cultures and beyond is currently seen as mutually enriching and the basis of Europe's common cultural heritage, the influence of one culture on another has also been instrumentalised in the past to create boundaries or to hierarchise the actors in cultural relations.
