Let's talk about Europe! - ‘Many conceptions of Europe. History, belonging and the European project in crisis’ in a book discussion with Gregor Feindt
As part of the joint event series ‘Let's talk about Europe!’ organised by the IEG and the Landeszentrale für politische Bildung (LpB), an evening discussion will be held on 26 June on the topic of 'Many conceptions of Europe. History, belonging and the European project in crisis’. Dr Constanze Itzel, Director of the House of European History in Brussels, and Dr Matthias Beermann, Spokesperson of the European Court of Auditors, will talk with PD Dr Gregor Feindt (IEG) about his recently published book ‘Shades of Blue: Claiming Europe in the Age of Disintegration’. Together with his co-authors, he analyses the political project ‘Europe’ and the relevance of history between integration and disintegration. The discussion will be moderated by Prof Dr Johannes Paulmann, Director of the IEG. Followed by a wine reception. The European political project is currently confronted with contradictory experiences: ever deeper integration meets concerns about disintegration and even division. But what does Europe mean in the public debate? What concepts are associated with Europe and how do these ideas of Europe relate to national, regional and political divisions? And what significance do historical perceptions and memory have for our idea of Europe? The book ‘Shades of Blue: Claiming Europe in the Age of Disintegration’ explores these questions. It shows how belonging to Europe and the EU was conceived in six European countries and how these ideas affect our present. The evening discussion is part of the series ‘Let's talk about Europe!’, a successful event series in which the IEG and the LpB Rhineland-Palatinate focus on current issues and crises in Europe and discuss them with an emphasis on their historical dimensions.
