How Medicinal Plants Became “Natural” Remedies: The German History of a Global Problem (1884–1945)

Dissertation Project

At the intersection of transnational history, environmental history, and the history of medicine, my thesis examines the impact of industrialized drug production on the use of medicinal plants. It revisits the question of the 'revival' of medicinal herbs in Germany during the first half of the 20th century, drawing on underexplored archives from the pharmaceutical industry. Additionally, it considers the influence of Nazism and proto-environmentalist movements on the 'naturalization' of medicinal plants.
